London CNN —The Prince of Wales was back in action on Thursday, carrying out his first public engagements since his wife, Catherine, revealed her cancer diagnosis last month. William, 41, visited a surplus food charity in Surrey before he was expected to head to a youth center in west London. Kate’s cancer was found in tests following an abdominal surgery in January. William’s presence will be a welcome signal to royal-watchers that his wife is feeling well enough for him to resume public-facing duties. He made his most significant public appearance on Easter Sunday following the tradition family church outing.

CNN —The public absence of Catherine, Princess of Wales, has grown from a niche royal watcher concern to an international punchline in a matter of weeks. Droves of amateur detectives have crafted timelines and deep dives into the princess’ movements over the last few months, combining real concern with outlandish conspiracy. The uproar, the theories, the analyses, the jokes and, yes, the serious concern — they all show the multitude of ways people interact with and view the royal family. “Not [the royal family] specifically, just anyone in that kind of position.”Catherine, Princess Of Wales is seen during the opening of Evelina London's new children's day surgery unit on December 5, 2023 in London, England. Chris Jackson/Getty ImagesMore dire than the growing transatlantic comedy routine is the apparent dissolution of trust between some media outlets and the royal family.

This photo released by Kensington Palace shows Kate, Princess of Wales, with her children, Prince Louis, left, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. In a constitutional monarchy where kings and queens wield little actual, but plenty of soft power, visibility is everything. Perhaps the biggest clue: How on earth had William managed to capture all three children smiling at the same time? The palace meanwhile failing to issue a comment for long hours while the nation dove head first down the rabbit hole. More than 12 hours later, Kate finally responded: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she said on social media.

After a week of often hysterical speculation about her well-being, there were suddenly two plausible pieces of evidence that Catherine, Princess of Wales, was on the mend: a photo of her in a car driven by her mother and a confirmation by the British Army that she would attend a military ceremony in June. But as with almost everything surrounding the health of Prince William’s 42-year-old wife in recent weeks, any sense of certainty quickly melted away. A palace official said on Tuesday that the army had jumped the gun in announcing Catherine’s participation in Trooping the Color, an annual ritual that celebrates the birthday of the sovereign. And while British newspapers reported the existence of paparazzi shots, purportedly of Catherine, that were posted on social media on Monday, none of them published the images. At the end of another hothouse news cycle, consumers of royal news were back where they started: in the dark about the princess, who had abdominal surgery in January and has not been seen during her lengthy convalescence.

William, a source told CNN, had called the Greek royal family to let them know of his last-minute change of plans. Many saw the prince’s recent return to royal duties as a signal that the prognosis in the Wales household was improving quickly. If the role of monarchy is presence, continuity and unity, it was a stark visual seeing the royal family enter the chapel without several key senior faces among them. It’s worth emphasizing that the royal source told CNN that Kate “continues to be doing well” in her recovery.

London CNN —Prince William will miss a memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece because of a personal matter, a royal source has told CNN. The Prince of Wales, 41, had been expected to attend the remembrance event at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. King Charles III is also absent from the service as he continues his treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. After a military coup in 1967, Constantine and his family fled to Rome, and the military regime appointed a regent to take his place. The Greek monarchy was abolished on June 1, 1973, when the military regime proclaimed the country a republic – a decision that was backed by a subsequent referendum.

British banks backed large parts of the U.S. slavery economy, and British factories were the world’s largest customers for the cotton produced by plantations in southern U.S. states. In 1663, it was granted a monopoly by King Charles II for the British slavery trade. In 1794, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin, a machine that would transform the U.S. slavery economy. Mill owners including the Arkwrights, one of the richest families in the industry, were Smith family clients. Two British travel writers visited Farm Pen in 1837, when the land was still in Smith family hands.

London CNN —There was a moment that fell under the radar while the Prince of Wales was in Singapore this week. There, Prince William and a star-studded cast announced this year’s cohort of winner, but earlier in the week, the heir to the throne achieved his own, quieter, victory. One of the questions we’re often asked is about the real-world return from all the speeches, walkabouts and waving the royal family does. Having this kind of quantifiable impact is at the core of William’s vision for his time as Prince of Wales.

“There’s a lot of climate exaggeration,” said Gates, who founded Microsoft and is now a philanthropist. Some financial institutions could supplement emissions reduction measures with the voluntary purchase of carbon credits, according to a handout. She said the goal is to affirm “the importance of credible net-zero commitments and to encourage financial institutions that make them to take consistent approaches to implementation." Yellen also announced that a group of philanthropic organizations – including Bezos Earth Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies and others – would pledge $340 million to help financial institutions “develop and execute robust, voluntary net-zero commitments,” she said. Afterward, Prince William headed toward ground zero, where he visited with firefighters at FDNY Ten House, the station that was the first on the scene at the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks.
